My News!

Due to the nature of hypnotherapy and mindfulness, a lot of what I do remains confidential. However, whenever I can, I like to share what's been going on in 'Rachel's world'. My work in group mindfulness and tutoring lends itself more to sharing than 1:1 hypnotherapy or mindfulness sessions, so many of the posts you'll see here are to do with that. But that doesn't mean that the private 1:1s aren't going on. It's just that I take the confidentiality of my clients very seriously.
Thanks for dropping by!

Wow! It's been a long time since I've updated my News page.
Things again have been pretty busy.
Most of my time is spent working on a one to one basis with private clients for hypnotherapy. It's great when they get back in touch with me, sometimes months later, to say how pleased they are with the changes they've been able to make. Sometimes my private clients come to see me purely for mindfulness based interventions too.
So then there's the mindfulness side of things which is becoming increasingly popular in the corporate and education world. I'm involved with delivering mindfulness workshops at a number of different venues and again it's always great when people ask you back for more! I also deliver weekly mindfulness sessions to groups which take on a slightly different format, and I'm able to build on the experience of participants as we go along, taking on board any feedback that may have been offered. You might like to look in on this page to find out the organisations I've been working with.
I'm also still very closely linked with Central England College of Clinical Hypnosis and the UK College of Mindfulness Meditation, helping to train students in these healing techniques.

Monkey Mind and Lizard Brain
In the last few weeks, I've been lucky enough to be asked to sit in on, and help out with, some of the training sessions at Central England College of Clinical Hypnosis. So I took part in the most recent Mind Wide Open Introductory Day and a number of the Solution Focused Hypnotherapy days. It's been a few years now since I completed my training as a hypnotherapist, so I've really enjoyed being part of the educational side of things again - and being in the great position of now being someone who's qualified and set up in their own business, helping out with those who are just starting out in their new chosen career. And, as always, the learning is a two-way process - I learnt loads listening to others' points of view. Thanks everyone at Central England.
I've also introduced two new friends to some of my sessions (really intended for children but proving to work equally well with adults)! Monkey Mind and Lizard Brain are brilliant at helping to explain how we react in times of stress :)

ACT!

In January, I took part in my regular CPD (Continuing Professional Development) training on the subject of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This is a very effective form of therapy where the client is gently guided to accept the thoughts they may be having about a particular situation, and then commit to going forward in whatever way they think might be best. Mindfulness is a huge part of ACT and I guess that's why it really struck a chord with me. Another emphasis is 'values-based living' ie. identifying what is really important to us personally, and utilising that internal compass to help us make appropriate decisions. It was fascinating stuff and I certainly hope to employ the techniques with my own clients.

At the beginning of February, I attended an NCH peer group support meeting where the speaker talked about specific things to be aware of when supporting survivors of abuse, including the effects of an abusive relationship on the survivor's own identity. All extremely interesting and helpful.

And again, it's been lovely to have people get in contact to let me know how things are going in their lives post-therapy :) Thank you. It really does mean such a lot.

I've just realised I didn't get round to posting a blog or news update in November! Shows that things got a bit busy!
All the usual things like seeing clients for one to one hypnotherapy and helping to run our regular mindfulness groups at Central England College, and Mindfulness Teacher Training. But also, in November, I gave a talk to a peer support group run by the National Council for Hypnotherapy - I talked about how mindfulness can be used within hypnotherapy to help clients who may be suffering with anxiety and/or depression. It was received very well, and obviously many hypnotherapists already incorporate elements of mindfulness within their work.
And a change to my practice that's also happened in the last few weeks is that I can now offer recordings of sessions via Dropbox - this is invaluable to many of my clients as they no longer have the wherewithal to play cds (this makes me feel very old)! All i have to do is upload the recording and send them the link. They then simply download the file to either their computer or phone. Thumbs up all round!
It's great to have heard back from a few of my clients who came to see me in the last 12 months or so. Some of them got in touch just before Christmas to tell me what a difference the hypnotherapy had made to their lives. This is great to know, and thanks to those people.
2017 is looking good so far but, as with so many things in life, you never can tell if they'll work out in quite the way you imagine. I'm very excited all the same so watch this space!
Happy New Year :)

Fun times!

Once again, October was a very busy month!

The first of the month was supervision day! All qualified hypnotherapists have to undergo Clinical Supervision a number of times each year, where we are mentored by a supervisor and peer group. This is always really useful and hypnotherapists attend from all over the UK. It’s a great way to share good practice.

A week later I was involved in delivering a couple of mindfulness workshops to teenagers involved in The National Citizenship Service – Powered By The Challenge event in Birmingham. This is a hugely successful event with literally hundreds of young people involved. The organisation was fantastic and I felt it was great that they wanted to get mindfulness onto the agenda with this age group!

Another week later saw the start of our Mindfulness Teacher Training modules taking place at the weekends. Due to popular demand, our weekday modules become heavily oversubscribed and the weekend option has proved to be very popular too. I love being a tutor on this course.
And then there were all the usual things like the mindfulness group held every Wednesday evening at Central England Therapy Centre, and all the 1 to 1 hypnotherapy clients seen during the day.

I’m looking forward to another busy month in November!

Back to school...

September proved to be another busy month for me, doing my bit to help train new students at the UK College of Mindfulness Meditation, seeing 1:1 clients old and new, and leading the 'odd' mindfulness group at Central England College. And some might agree when I say 'odd'! For the last few sessions that I've taken I've had people focus on things they might not normally focus on, for example, the space around their hands, the space between the top of their head and the moon, the silence in between sounds and the such-like. This has made for some great feedback afterwards and people have really appreciated it :)
If you'd like to come along to one of our Mindfulness groups please ring 0121 444 1110 to book your place. Sessions are held every Wednesday evening at Central England College, 240 Alcester Road South, Kings Heath, B14 6DR.

Summer holidays!

child resting
August was a particularly busy month, with me seeing a number of new clients including children whose parents were taking the opportunity to help their child during the summer holidays and before the onset of the new school year.
Working with children is always quite different from working with adults. Children are often more naturally open to new ways of looking at things, and hypnotherapy can work very quickly. Often, the sessions are made up of more practical techniques that the child can take away with them and start using right away, with shortened 'eyes closed' visualisations incorporated too as appropriate. Children are naturally on the move all the time and it's quite ok that they are not sitting still, listening with eyes closed all the time during a session of hypnotherapy. Some can do this and some are not yet ready, and that's fine. It all works the same!
I endeavour to utilise the child's own interests in their own personalised hypnotherapy programme and a parent is present at all times (often benefitting in their own way too with a little bit of down time).
If you're thinking of choosing hypnotherapy to help your child please ensure that the practitioner is fully qualified, and holds an up to date DBS certificate.
If you'd like more information about how hypnotherapy and mindfulness can help your child, do please get in touch:

Central England College in Kings Heath, Birmingham trains hypnotherapists and mindfulness practitioners from all over the UK. It is also one of the top providers of clinical supervision and Continual Professional Development for these professions. In the last 6 months I have been lucky enough to become part of the team at Central England College, which is where I myself trained, helping to organise each cohort of trainees, explaining about the various courses on offer, and taking bookings. I love meeting such a range of different people from all walks of life and from all over the country who are wanting to embark on this particular direction in their lives, for such varying reasons.

Mindfulness Retreat - Stanton, Cotswolds

I really enjoyed leading a couple of mindfulness sessions yesterday at Nick Cooke's mindfulness retreat at The Guildhouse, Stanton, in the Cotswolds.
There were 14 people who had booked onto the retreat, as well as Nick, Carmel and myself from 'Blue Sky Mind', and the day consisted of meditations, a 'quiet (yet not silent) lunch', and a mindful walk down into the village of Stanton.
The next one will be held in September. If you'd like further information, please phone Central England Therapy Centre on 0121 444 1110.
