Try mindfulness for yourself right now!
All you need to do is recognise those times when your thoughts take centre-stage instead of what you're actually doing (which for most of us is probably most of the time)! Therefore, you can choose to be more mindful in everyday situations, for example, while brushing your teeth, taking a shower or eating a meal. Instead of doing these things while thinking of something else, try to give your full attention to whatever you're doing. If you're eating, take a little time to notice all of the textures, flavours and smells of the food. If you're taking a shower, begin to notice how the water feels on different parts of your body, how the soap feels different, and all the different aromas that emanate from the shower gel. If you're going for a walk, take time to notice the colours, the smells, and the sounds that are all around you.
Often, we're so caught up in our thoughts - feeling fed up about past events or worrying about the future - that we completely miss the whole experience of being alive in this very moment, right now. Recognising the times we do this, and with practise over time, we can learn to rein our thoughts back into the present moment. Life still happens but mindfulness can help us to 'go with the flow' a little more.
